The National Park Cycle Route: Through a Real Forest
It is not easy to cycle the 65 kilometre National Park Cycle Route in the Bavarian Forest in one day. The section from the border crossing Ferdinandsthal-Deffernik near Bayerisch Eisenstein to Finsterau-Bucina includes stretches of varying degrees of difficulty. However, parts are very suitable for families with children.
Families can best experience the ancient forest of the National Park on two wheels by taking the parallel route to the Regen Valley Route to Zwiesel and on to Frauenau and Oberfrauenau.
This is shorter and less challenging that the main route, which starts at the Falkenstein and goes via Schleicher, Scheuereck, Buchenau and the reservoir to Oberfrauenau.
From Relaxing to Challenging
The route from Spiegelau via the National Park Information Centre at Neuschönau to Mauth is also a pleasant ride. The route goes through 22 kilometres of unique natural surroundings in ArberLand.
The last few kilometres of the route, between Mauth and Finsterau to the Bavarian-Czech border is more difficult. There is a significant height differential to tackle. But at the Open Air Museum in Finsterau there is the opportunity to stop at the Museums historic pub.
The return journey can be made on the Finsterau Bus, on which you can piggy back the bike while relaxing on the bus and enjoying the scenery.
TIP: Combine Cycle, Bus and Train
If you want to take it easy, you can take the Finsterau Bus to Buchwald or the Finsterau Open Air Museum. From there you can coast down the Reschbach valley and get on the bus again before the next uphill stretch.
The Finsterau Bus is the perfect connection between Finsterau and the station at Spiegelau, so that cyclists young and old can continue their journey in comfort on the Waldbahn.
