Keyboard shortcuts and tab key sequences can make navigation by keyboard much faster. However, it is difficult to establish standards which apply to all browsers, as browsers use some shortcuts in conjunction with the Alt key. This means that only the keys 0-9 are available for standard commands as these have not so far been used for browser specific short cuts.

The browsers need different combinations of keystrokes to activate the short cut functions. In addition, there is the difference between Windows and Macintosh applications – whereas Windows frequently uses the Alt key, Macintosh often uses the Ctrl key.

Internet Explorer uses the keystroke combination Alt + Number + Enter, Firefox Shift + Alt + Number, Opera Shift + Esc + Number and Safari Alt + Number (Macintosh: Ctrl instead of Alt). It is made more complicated by needing to press all 3 keys at the same time in Firefox in order to use the function. With Internet Explorer and Opera on the other hand, the first 2 keys have to be pressed first and then the 3rd key.
